Admittingly Morello is kinda right and also very wrong.
Healers are a problem in DotAlikes/MOBAs/whatever (I’m not even gonna talk about other games, because I don’t know what the fuck goes on in the TF2 comp meta). The problem with dedicated healers is that they just make laning incredibly passive and extremely fucking boring.
So what about all those heals in DotA2? Aren’t those bad?
Wrong, because nearly ever single healing ability shown in this picture come with an offensive option as well.
Listed in this picture:
Shadow Word and Soul Rip can be casted on an ally to heal but can also be casted on enemies to do damage.
Purification, Shadow Wave and Death Pulse all also do damage to enemies around the person getting healed (Well Death Pulse is a bit different but you know what I mean. )
Leach Seed is like the above 3, but HAS to be casted on an enemy. It’s a slow/damage dealing spell above heal, the heal is just a nice little bonus.
I don’t think I need to explain why Tether isn’t just a heal. Go look up Wisp’s skillset and you’ll understand
And the spells that are just flat out heals (Nature’s Attendance, Healing Ward, Hand of God, Voodoo Restoration (Still don’t know why the poster hasn’t fixed that picture where it uses the Paralyzing Cask icon instead of the actual VR icon) and Inner Vitality) are flat out heals, but they’re put on extremely aggressive characters, and the only hero in that bunch that can actually be counted as lane supports is Witch Doctor. Chen is a farm independant ganker/pusher (Lane support Chen is hella dumb, Enchantress is similiar but she’s less supporty then Chen and can actually carry as well as gank/push. Juggernaut and Huskar are anything BUT supports.
Hell, Witch Doctors don’t tend to get more then 1 point in Voodoo Restoration, if any points at all, because most of the time they won’t have the mana to keep it going, and most of the time more points in Cask and Malediction is better because gotta get the kills yo.
Which brings me to the next point.
Even if these are heals, only a handful can even spam them in laning phase.
The only two I can think of here is Warlock and Dazzle; but even they shouldn’t just use it every time it’s up. Maybe Necrolyte too if he’s a solo Necro who can take advantage of Sadism, but even then he shouldn’t just cast it every time it’s up for the heal, you should also go in close to harass your lane opponent with it too. For everyone else, spamming it means NO MANA AFTER THE SECOND CAST LOL. Some heroes heals are pretty shit for laning phase too, because Healing Ward is percentage based heal he doesn’t get that much health in the laning phase with just a level 1 healing ward; and trust me it should be a level 1 healing ward, Bladefury levels take so much priority over it it’s not even funny, and Inner Vitality isn’t that great laning phase tbh, sometimes it’ll get you can hang back if you’ve been harassed hard and get a good chunk of HP back.
So basically, the reason DotA gets heals that don’t make the laning phase passive as fuck though healing fuck fests is because they all have aggressive extra points to it, so it’s not just defensive lane healing and you can actually go and kill people (AND KILLING PEOPLE IS THE FUN PART OF THESE GAMES BY THE WAY, JUST HAD TO BRING THAT UP, THE FUN PART ISN’T PASSIVELY FARMING FOR 20 MINUTES.), and you can’t spam them so you can’t just sit in lane with a healer and have them heal your dick off all lane and be unkillable, but unable to kill people either.
Long story short; there are no dedicated healers in DotA2 because they’re boring as fuck to play as and against. The closest thing to a dedicated healer is Omniknight and Abaddon, and those two still have plenty of kill potiental in lanes and can also be played as carries at times. Trust me, I’ve seen Omni carry, it’s some serious shit yo.
This brings us to League.
Lets discuss Soraka; see, a prime example of what a support shouldn’t be in a DotAlike/MOBA/whatever you want to call it.
Laning as or against Soraka was the dullest fucking thing in the entire goddamn world. Because Soraka had infinite mana because of her spell that gives man, she can just permanently heal her lane partner so killing them was neigh impossible, combined with all the already built in gank escape tools that all heroes can come equipped with. However, a Soraka lane can’t kill shit because Soraka has no CC and no damage and neither does the carry she was laning with most of the time.
Same shit with champions like Sona and Taric, but even those two were better because they still had the potential to fucking kill. Sona can actually harass and has a good ult stun, while Taric as his swag ass stun to get kills with, but even then they were pretty dull laning phases because they would just heal their lane partner to infinity and beyond making kills beyond difficult. And what lets them do this is that 90% of League champions have low cooldowns, low mana costs (or no mana costs at all with some champions), and probably a really cheap early mana regen item that gives them neigh infinite sustain (which proves that Riot’s champion design team thinks that the only way to make a hero fun is to make all of their abilities have low cooldown and low mana costs because slamming all the hotkeys at all times of the day = fun!) .
So what about that Soraka rework, Mettic?
Honestly I think Morello went into the Soraka rework with good intentions; to make Soraka not just a walking permant healbot that’s boring as fuck. However he fucked it up; he just turned her into ANOTHER champion who’s role in teamfights is to dick about being super tanky pressing QQQQQQQQ. And she’s still no kills the lane.
And I really don’t know why Morello only complains about heals, when so many of the fucking champions in that game have either A: A shield spell, B: a life steal spell, C: A dash spell, D: Some kind of defensive steroid or E: All of the above. Sheilds are especially bad, because if anything they cause more damage creep then heals that can have an offensive side effect. Hell, ALL OF THE CHAMPIONS IN THIS GAME CAN HAVE A FUCKING SHIELD BECAUSE OF A FUCKING SHIELD SUMMONER SPELL. Atleast you can be aggressive with dashes and life steal.
LONG STORY SHORT:
DEDICATED HEALERS -ARE- BAD IN DOTALIKES/MOBAS/ASSFAGGOTS BECAUSE THEY MAKE LANING DULL AS FUCK, AND WE ARE PLAYING A VIDEO GAME. VIDEO GAMES ARE SUPPOSE TO BE FUN. KILLING PEOPLE IN VIDYA IS FUN.
THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT ALL HEALS HAVE TO BE REMOVED, JUST GIVE THE HEROES/CHAMPIONS WHO GET THE HEAL AN OFFENSIVE OPTION TO PROMOTE AGGRESSIVE LANING (WHICH IS FUN) AND NOT JUST DICK SUCKING. EVEN THE MOST DEFENSIVE OF LANE SUPPORTS IN DOTA (OMNI/DAZZLE/ECT) CAN STILL GET KILLS (PURIFICATION SHITS OUT DAMAGE IF YOU HIT IT AND DAZZLE HAS A GOOD SLOW/SITUTATIONAL NUKE), AND EVEN THEN THEY AREN’T UNKILLABLE.
MORELLO HAS GOOD INTENTIONS BUT JUST HAPPENS TO BE A SHIT DESIGNER AND DOESN’T THINK THINGS ALL THE WAY THOUGH AND THINKS HEALS IS THE ONLY THING THAT CAUSES DAMAGE CREEP AND FLOODS HIS GAME WITH SHIELDS AND OTHER DEFENSE ONLY SHIT, MAKING THE GAME BORING AS FUCK BECAUSE LEAGUE IS ONE OF THE WORST CASES OF DAMAGE CREEP IN VIDYA.
THE END.
Thank you for that Mettic
A lot of the problems in LoL derive from a problem that Mettic brings up which is that Riot is obsessed with making everything low cooldown and low mana cost. Let’s just cut to the point here… it makes the game more casual, easier to pick up, harder to fail at, and more popular. Just look at the massive problem at the moment that is Blitzcrank: The only reason he’s a problem is because he can essentially spam his hook indefinitely. If you look at Pudge, he can’t even cast it twice early on without items. And, even if he did want to get some mana back, he can’t just sit in the lane and pop a mana potion while sitting in exp range (because mana potions and salves break from damage).
Let’s be real here, mana is hardly even a thing in LoL. It is for some champions (Karthus, Cass, Ryze, etc.) but for others it’s almost impossible to run out of mana even if you’re spamming your abilities (Eve, Jax, Twitch, etc.). Now, the real question is… is that a bad thing? On its own, not particularly. Personally I think that mana management adds a necessary constraint that causes much less problems than a scenario where mana management is practically a non-issue (especially with Flask in the game now, in addition to blue buff).
I have no idea what Riot’s design philosophy is because they constantly make incredibly questionable decisions, but I assume what they’re trying to do is fight sustain with sustain with the introduction of Crystalline Flask and the nerf to boots. Well, by no surprise, it isn’t working. It’s backfired horribly and what has NEEDED to happen for years is finally (I think) going to happen: Health potions are going to get nerfed. I know it may sound silly to some of you, but health potions have been closet OP items since LoL’s inception. I don’t know what the answer is for LoL (changing it to be like salves may not be the best choice), but they need to do something because this game is spiraling into a terrible sustain war for top/mid lane that isn’t fun for anyone. But, you see, this is where the problem arises. Once you nerf item sustain, then the actual sustaining champions start to come back into power and dominate (Soraka, Nidalee, Yorick, etc.). The only reason why this actually happens is because all of these champions have low cooldown and low mana cost abilities that allow them to infinitely sustain.
TL;DR Root cause analysis shows that the sustain issue (with both items and champion abilities) is caused by low cooldown and low mana cost abilities, NOT by the concept of healing abilities or items. However, low cooldowns and low mana costs make LoL easier to play, easier to pick up, and more enjoyable for a larger percentage of people, so likely nothing will be done by Riot to balance it.
Reblogging for the discussions ^___^
but holy shit Morello is an idiot. I really hate how mighty and superior these Riot guys act as if their game design philosophy is the best over any other competitive game’s design. It’s not. Sure, LoL may be fun (
I play it sometimes, don’t tell anyone), but I don’t necessarily agree with all of the game’s design and features (lots of mana/spammy skills as discussed above, runes, masteries, static lanes). Here’s the thread btw: http://na.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?t=370752

I guess a lot of you already know if you’ve taken a recent look at the TF2 steam workshop that my old pic “Hamster Pyro” inspired Rain* to make the workshop item The Munchking Matchstick!
I’m so happy that I had to draw something to celebrate this! Also if you like this cutie patootie feel free to give some feedback on the steam workshop page :)
